SUN BELT CONFERENCEThe Sun Belt Conference was formed in 1976 with six members competing in four men’s sports, and is currently comprised of 13 institutions of higher learning while sponsoring 19 championship sports for men and women. After the 1990–91 basketball season, with the exception of Western Kentucky, South Alabama, Jacksonville, and Arkansas-Little Rock, all members of the Sun Belt departed for other conferences. The conference did not sponsor football until 2001, when the league added former Big West Conference members New Mexico State and North Texas as full members. Followed by then-independent Middle Tennessee State and independents Louisiana-Monroe (ULM), Big West member Idaho as “football only” members. In 2003, another Big West school, Utah State, was also added as a “football only” member, but it departed in 2005 with Idaho and New Mexico State for the WAC.
