It goes with out saying that being ranked #1 and sporting a 10-0 record is a great position to be in for recruiting. Of course I’m talking about the Florida Gators and how they just got Joshua Shaw, the country’s No. 3-rated cornerback prospect.
Shaw passed on LSU, Ohio State, Southern Cal. and went with Urban Meyer’s team, make this a SEC high 10 commitments from high ranked prospects. The future is indeed bright for the Gator nation. Shaw might enroll early and thus be ready to practice by March.
Of course the real question on everyone’s mind is will the Gators be in able to retain such excellence for years to come. With prospect like Shaw we can say yes!
Shaw, who’s from Palmdale, Calif., is expected to enroll early and be on campus in time for spring practice in March. He picked Florida among a group of finalists that also included Southern California, LSU and Ohio State.
An Under Armor All-American, the 6-foot-2, 181-pound Shaw is rated as the No. 33 prospect overall in the ESPNU 150.
The Gators have an SEC-high 10 commitments now that are members of the ESPNU 150, and all 10 are ranked in the top 71. Seven of those 10 are ranked among the top 33 prospects nationally.
Don’t count them out altogether. For certain going into week 10 of the BCS standings it looks like the Gators ( 1) and Alabama (2) are a shoe-in for the big money bowls. Yet regardless TCU continues to press ahead, on track to have it’s first undefeated regular season since 1938. After last weeks beat down of #21 Utah 55-27, coach Patterson and his team is waiting to capitalize on any mistakes made by Florida, Alabama, or Texas.
Only two teams stand between them and perfect season…Wyoming and the hapless New Mexico. All this from a school that comes from a conference that doesn’t get an automatic bowl game. So hats off to Coach Gary Patterson and his Horned Frogs for a well played season.
In hopes of shaking things up for the Gamecocks, Steve Spurrier hs taken over the role of chief shot caller. While insisteing that he was always involved ( he had given it over to his son, Stevie Jr.)he wants to make clear that the buck stops with him offensively.
We can only hope this can make the difference needed as South Carolina has been struggling on offense. The bottom line is that South Carolina hasn’t been able to score points. The Gamecocks (6-4, 3-4) haven’t scored more than 16 points in their last four SEC games and have No. 1 Florida coming to town this weekend.
Spurrier claims here is here for the long haul and feels the best of the Gamecocks is still to come.
Oregon running back LeGarrette Blount, who was suspended for the season after punching a Boise State player in the wake of the season opener, has been allowed to rejoin the Ducks.
Blount will be able to play for the Ducks (No. 13 BCS, No. 14 AP) on Saturday night when they host Arizona State. He missed eight games.
“Now it is up to me to prove to people that their lasting impressions of me are not what they saw in Boise,” he said.
Blount punched Byron Hout following the nationally televised opener, bringing the Broncos’ defensive end to his knees. The next day he was suspended for the season by Kelly, but he was allowed to keep his scholarship and practice with the team.
Rudolph out with shoulder injury.
Notre Dame will likely be without one of its top offensive weapons for the rest of the regular season.
Tight end Kyle Rudolph, who left Saturday’s loss to Navy in the first half with a shoulder injury, is unlikely to play again before a possible bowl game, coach Charlie Weis said Tuesday.
Big East Coaching Salaries.
USA Today did a terrific piece today on college football coaching salaries, complete with a searchable database. Here’s what each Big East coach makes, according to the report:
UCONN Stabbing Death
VERNON, Conn. — An arrest warrant affidavit says the fight that led to the stabbing death of University of Connecticut football player Jasper Howard began when one of his teammates “disrespected” a woman at a school-sponsored dance.
The affidavit released Tuesday accuses a 21-year-old Bloomfield man, John Lomax, of murder in the Oct. 18 killing of Howard. The document includes an array of witness statements about the encounter.
Howard’s teammate, Michael Smith, told investigators that Howard threw a punch at a man matching Lomax’s description before he was stabbed.
The affidavit also says Johnny Hood, one of six men charged in the case, told police that the fight began when another man, later identified as football player Brian Parker, made comments about a woman at the dance.
With the BCS rankings out this week Alabama moved to # 2 right behind ever the dominant Florida Gators. Of course this has all the makings of a classic showdown for the SEC championship. For college football fans this is like having your cake ( SEC match-up) and eating it too ( BCS bowl game).
Of course of the trick is how to keep your teams focused and play. Questions which both the Gators and Alabama must contend with. As for the fans it’s a dream match up. So get your team colors on and show your support!
So as we continue our way to the SEC we come to Auburn and the Georgia Bulldogs. On the surface they seem very similar but that could be deceptive.
The Bulldog nation feels that they are stagnating and another 8 win season would just confirm that they are stuck in mediocrity. Fans want to see a team that competes well, a team that should have beat Tennessee and at least show up when the Gators come to town.
Fans want to know what coach Richt is going to do about the Bulldogs knack for racking up penalties. The Bulldogs have an SEC-high 85 penalties, which is 17 more than the next closest team. They’re averaging 77.3 penalty yards per game, which is nearly 20 yards more than the next most penalized team. That needs to change.
Now to Auburn, where there is hope in the air. There is still a honeymoon period with new coach under first-year coach Gene Chizik. An eight-win season would go a long way to satisfying the boosters and fans alike.
A win against Georgia would boost morale and would help build confidence to deal with the Alabama finale.
So a tale of two programs: one brimming with hope, the other hoping to stay out of mediocrity-ville

Ahhh, fall: the morning air gets crisp, the leaves start to change to their autumnal hues… and most importantly, gridirons across the land are again alive with the pomp and pagentry of college football! This weekend marks the beginning of the 2009-2010 college football season. To celebrate the joyous renewal of pigskin rivalries, we’ve created this KML file marking the home stadiums of the 245 NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) teams. So whether you’d like to take a trip down memory lane and re-visit the stadium of your alma mater or if you’d like more information about the next opponent of your favorite team, we’ve got the file for you. We’ve included a quick overview of each school, a link to school news, the name and an image of their mascot, and their home stadium. Oh, and be sure to turn on ’3D Buildings’ for full effect.
